Three Days in Prague!

Visiting Prague!

As part of our Viking Cruise we were able to extend our trip to include a few days in the Czech Republic.  We loved it!  We arrived by bus on Saturday around 3 pm.  We were given instructions on how to use the subway system and where the Viking shuttle would take us and where it would pick us up.  Every 1/2 hour the shuttle left the hotel and drove to the city center to either drop off or pick up.  Viking was thoughtful in providing the shuttle service. It saved us money and time.  So the first night we just explored…we walked and walked until we couldn’t walk any more. The shuttle was exactly where it said it would be and drove us back to the hotel. The hotel Viking chose for us was the Corinthia Hotel Prague and it was just stunning!  Daily breakfast was included in our package and there was definitely enough to choose from. From the lobby to the rooms, this hotel was modern, classic, and welcoming.

Viking had an area of its own so we could ask questions and get assistance if needed. We were amazed at how friendly the Viking Personnel were and baffled by how many red shirts we saw through out our trip.  Viking has cornered the English speaking market on European River Cruising.

Even the public restrooms were sleek.
I can’t remember all of the buildings names, most of them are churches or cathedrals, but all of them were beautifu and very old.  We loved the cobble stone streets and the medieval architecture.
 Flowers are for sale everywhere.
City center in downtown Prague.  The center of the street is for pedestrians only.
We were able to find a wonderful dark beer on our first night.  We both liked the semi-dark. However Pisner’s are the most prevalent in Prague.
Day 2 in Prague We were up early and running, literally.  The Prague Marathon was taking place and most of Prague was shut down.  Our shuttle driver took us as close to the marathon as he could before he wished us luck. We told him we were going to jump into the marathon and see the city that way.  He laughed, but that’s exactly what we did.
We ran about four miles of the marathon and then carefully, without disturbing any runners, we jumped out of the race. The rest of the day were played tourists and saw some amazing sights.
For lunch we had a delicious salad with warmed goat cheese, beet root, and almonds with a mustard dressing and we split a Hawaiian pizza.  Never knew Prague has such good pizza.
Late afternoon, we rented e-bikes and went on a tour of the city with a young Czech man who loved to tell stories.  He told us so much about his city and why he loves it.
The views were amazing.
Our tour guide treated us to a great beer at a monastery  The beer in Prague is cheaper than the water.  Most people order beer with their meals because of the cost.
That evening we partook in a medevil dinner.  We saw first hand the traditions of the Czech culture during an evening of food, dance, and beer.  We were entertained by belly dancers, flame throwers, medieval fencers and magicians.  The food was so good.  We had smoked turkey breast, with roasted red and yellow beets, grilled vegetable skewers with sesame sauce and mashed potatoes, traditional Czech potato soup, and homemade pie for dessert.  We were stuffed.

After dinner, we walked Prague at night. So beautiful.
Day 3 in Prague
Viking had a special day planned for us. We were to board a bus and take a tour of Prague with an experienced tour guide.  We saw so much and took so many pictures.
The Klementinum library in Prague was voted the most beautiful library in the world.  It is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture.  It first opened in 1722 as part of the Jesuit university and it houses over 20,000 books.
Such a cute bar.

St. Charles Bridge
This church was amazing.  The Czech Republic has more churches than most other countries and yet the Czech people (80%) do not attend church.  The churches are used for concerts, marriages, christenings, and tours.
Prague’s Astronomical clock, installed in 1410, is the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still working.  It’s located in old town Prague.  Every hour a crowd of hundreds stand in front of it to watch the clock reveal the 12 Apostles.
Three days in Prague and we just scratched the surface.  We needed more time in each of the stops along the Danube. We are now thinking we need to bike through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.  Maybe next summer, we will see 🙂
We brought this artwork home and framed it as a reminder of our time in Prague.
DAK Travel Tips:  Only buy souvenirs for yourselves, not the entire family.  Let them buy their own when they travel to parts of the world…too expensive, takes too much room in your suitcase, and you end up buying anything just to get them something.
We bought beer mugs for ourselves and the picture above.  We use the mugs often and always comment on how much fun we had.  We usually always buy mugs from destinations we have traveled.  The picture above is sitting on the mantel in the great room.  We’ll keep it there for awhile then move it somewhere more permanent.
Pack only clothes that can be worn twice.  Viking River is a casual type of cruise, I never wore a dress and Dave never wore a tie.  We were very comfortable in travel/street clothes. To dress up an outfit for dinner I usually put on jewelry or a dressier cardigan.  I brought lots of layers and I’m glad I did.  There were some very cold mornings and afternoons were usually warm.
Get used to writing in a journal.  Write down what you do and see each day.  Take notes. These will become useful later when you are showing pictures to friends and family and you want to tell them what they are looking at.
Get your make-up routine down.  I was ready usually in just a few minutes.  I washed my hair every other day and wore it up or back most days.  A more made-up face would happen in the evening when we were dressing for dinner.  A girl’s got to feel pretty 🙂
Dave’s a big believer in travel underwear.  He has a few pairs of these and wears them on every vacation. He wears Ex-Officio.  They wash up in a sink and dry over night. Very thin and lightweight.
Read up on your history if you travel to Europe.  Our tour guides were wonderful and the information Viking sent ahead of the cruise was rich with information.
Hope you enjoyed Prague!
