A real German meal at the Dakota Inn-Rathskeller

Dakota Inn/Rathskeller

We had such fun at the Dakota Inn-Rathskeller last weekend!  The night we went was horrible weather but we braved the snowy streets of Michigan for some great German food and beer!

Dakota Inn-Rathskeller is located on John R street in Detroit. Although it’s not the safest area, nor does it have the prettiest surroundings, it’s still worth your time in going.  The parking lot is well lit and there is a security guard to watch over your car (it really is in a bad section of Detroit), but once you step through the entryway it’s like your stepping into a true German Hofbrauhaus.  The music, the beer, the waitstaff dressed in full German attire- we had so much fun! The sing-a-long was delightful and everyone participated. The food consisted of authentic German cuisine with offerings such as a Combo plate– One bratwurst and one Knackwurst, served with hot German potato salad and home cooked sauerkraut. And Huhnerfleisch which was season boneless chicken topped with mushrooms, onions and Swiss cheese, served with hot German potato salad and fresh mixed vegetables. Most of us ordered that. It was plenty of food and it complimented well with the German beer we chose.

I took lots of random pics as I was walking around.  I apologize for the pictures being so dark, I used my phone.

We entered the snowflake cutting contest and thought Sue should win- she teaches elementary SLI and had a handle on cutting snowflakes! In most of the pictures above you can see the competition we had in the snowflake contest…some people are really talented in their cutting skills 🙂  At some point the entire restaurant will be decorated for the winter in snowflakes cut by the customers.

I can’t believe I have never heard of this German gem in Detroit.   Now that I have, I will be sure to go back!  I can just imagine all of my brothers and their families really enjoying this place 🙂

Auf wiedersehen friends!
