When Blythe gives birth to her daughter, Violet, she wonders why she isn’t experiencing the euphoria other mothers do. Her own mother left her when she was eleven and her grandmother committed suicide, so she didn’t have great role models.   Still, she thought she could handle motherhood and wanted a family.   The first few years were tough, Violet was not an easy baby- often crying all night and a fussy eater.  Still, Blythe gave it her all.  Over the years Blythe and Violet seemed to dance around each other, not really committing fully to their relationship.   When Blythe overhears Violet say she hates her mother, Blythe begins to wonder what she has done wrong as a mother.  When she gets pregnant for a second time, she wonders about her mothering skills again. Although, instead of an unruly child, she gets Sam, a beautiful baby boy who sleeps well and seems to love all her attention. Finally, a child Blythe can bond with and Blythe begins to wonder if the problem with her relationship with Violet isn’t Violet’s fault.

A year later, Blythe’s world crashes, her baby boy is dead, and her daughter Violet is suspect.
