A lazy weekend!

Sometimes being lazy is good, right? That is how I would describe this past weekend- a lazy weekend. 🙂 We had no concrete plans on our calendar and so were able to just relax and do whatever we wanted to do.  So how did we spend our time?   Here is a rundown on how our weekend went down.

But, before we jump into the weekend- on Friday I got to spend the entire day with KJ and Ryan- I was in Grandma Heaven!  I get so much love from these little guys and when I am able to spend time with them, I fall in love all over again. 🙂

Our lazy weekend looked like this…

Friday night found us at a local grocery that has pre-made meals for sale.  I had a Lemon Rice soup and Dave got a piece of chicken and a pasta salad, both meals were tasty. 🙂   We try to eat out our local grocery a few times a month- it’s similar to Whole Foods and it’s usually very healthy and quick.

That night we watched a few episodes of a thriller we have been sucked into.  It’s called Chance on Hulu.  Are you familiar with it?  It’s started off slow, and we even thought we were wasting our time, but by the second episode we were hooked.

Saturday morning was very lazy.  We made coffee and lit the fireplace and sat and talked for two hours.  It was so nice not to rush off anywhere. I told Dave this is what retirement will be like and he can’t wait. 🙂  He played some music for me, his favorite Simon and Garfunkel, and I started menu planning for the week.  We ran a few miles and did a quick workout at home.  We grocery shopped and made turkey burgers for dinner and then proceeded to the basement to binge-watch Chance.  I think we watched three episodes, which is three hours of sitting…that’s a lot of sitting.   Oh, and did I mention we ate popcorn and drank beer while we were watching?  Yeah, we were bad.  But did I also mention that before we became comatose in front of the TV I whipped Dave in ping pong?  Yeah, I finally beat him at his own game and I loved it!

Sunday morning was spent at our local health club with our biking coach, Emon. This guy works you till it hurts.  He plays the best music and he is so motivating.  We usually burn 400-500 calories and bike 14-16 miles in our one-hour class.  Then a quick work out on the gym floor to work our muscles before heading home to eat lunch.  We decided to go to the movies and see a double feature.  More sitting in front of a screen, I guess we couldn’t get enough of that.  Anyway, the movies we saw were The Wife with Glen Close and Serenity with Matthew McConaughey.  Both good in their own right.  The Wife was serious and created lots of discussion between us and Serenity was weird but in a good way.  It also created lots of discussion. I liked it better than Dave, and now I want to research it to see if the movie is about what I think it is about.

Sunday night I beat Dave in a few games of Sequence, and then we found ourselves on the couch again watching Chance.

And that is it my friends our version of a lazy weekend!

We did at least exercise during our laziness. I ran 3 miles, Dave ran 5.  We worked out at home and the gym and we biked with Emon on Sunday morning. We ate somewhat healthy, avoided all the Super Bowl parties and bad food, and we watched a ton of TV and even made time for a double feature at the theater.

Maybe it’s because we are usually so busy and running around like crazy people that a weekend in front of a screen and fireplace was needed.

What would be included in your lazy weekend?

As I look ahead to next weekend we only have one event on the calendar…Chances are we will be watching Chance. 🙂

Just a few months ago at the White House.  We need to plan another trip.

New chair and pillow in foyer

Hi Everyone!  We recently purchased this chair at Marshall’s for the foyer.  I know I showed you a picture of it before when we had the wood floors installed, but I scored a new pillow in the clearance bin at Marshall’s the other day and I wanted to share it with you.  The foyer needed a chair for guests to sit and put on shoes or boots.  Also, the space the chair fits into was barren and just needed a little something.  This chair is smaller in scale and neutral in color.  It fits perfectly in the corner and matches the paint color and wood color so well.

Here are some other pics of the foyer so you can see the scale of it.  This has become my favorite part of the house for now.  When the sun comes in it is so pretty.

 Still love the new rug!

Here is the chair styled with a different pillow and a throw.  I like the versatility of the chair.  In the fall I will put an autumn pillow on it and I have the perfect Christmas pillow already.  Oh, the fun this little chair will bring!  I’m thinking a little table with a small plant sitting next to it might look nice too.  Although, you know Dave is a minimalist so added new pieces of furniture or knick knacks never sits well with him.

Hope you are having a wonderful week!

Karen

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells! Are you ready?

With Christmas just around the corner, I wanted to share some of our family’s favorite recipes.  Last year, I shared this recipe and told you that if I dared to show without this dish, my family would not let me in, and would probably send me home to prepare it for our family brunch on Christmas morning. It truly has become a staple item along with my sister-in-laws homemade coffee cakes.

I have made this Baked Egg Dish for as long as I can remember.  I have four brothers and they request this recipe every year when we get together to exchange gifts.  I found it in a Marshall Field’s Collection of Potluck Recipes Cookbook.

You can still find the cookbook on Amazon (click on the link under the book) and let me tell you, it is a great find.  I have used this cookbook for so many parties, just this weekend I made the Ham Party Rolls (page 33) for the teachers I worked with for so many years.  My brothers love the Baked Egg Dish on page 343.  I took a picture of the recipe for you. You can see the pencil drawing all over the page. Olivia was young and my little helper and she decided to draw on the page 🙂  -a cherished memory.    I don’t use green pepper or onion, but I do use lots of cheese and deli ham, usually a tavern ham sliced thin.   Otherwise, I follow the directions as listed.  So easy and yummy, and I especially like that I make it the night before and just bake it on Christmas morning. If I didn’t bring this dish with me on Christmas morning I think my brothers would lock the door! I’m grateful they enjoy my cooking and that I can provide a special memory for them.

Another favorite recipe –Paula Dean’s French Toast.  It is truly decadent and sinful, but soooo good.  I have made this recipe for friends to have with their families on Christmas morning. Once again, an easy-throw-together the night before and bake in the morning crowd pleaser 🙂
Ingredients
1 loaf French bread (13 to 16 ounces)
8 large eggs
2 cups half-and-half
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Dash salt
Praline Topping, recipe follows
Maple syrup
Praline Topping:
1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Directions
Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch each. (Use any extra bread for garlic toast or bread crumbs). Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and beat with a rotary beater or whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.
The next day, preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Spread Praline Topping evenly over the bread and bake for 40 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with maple syrup.
Praline Topping:
Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and blend well. Makes enough for Baked French Toast Casserole.

Presents are wrapped, menu is complete, music is playing in the background and I am enjoying the twinkle lights with a Rochester Red beer. The days ahead will be filled with family and friends and lots of laughter and conversation- I can’t wait!  🙂

Catching Up!

Happy Tuesday!  Hope your week is going wonderfully.  So far, so good over here.  On the weekend we had a wonderful date night, I took a few pictures at dinner.

I need to read or watch a tutorial on how to take selfies!

We ended up at Hyde Park Steak House in Birmingham.  It was delicious!!
We both enjoyed fillet with mashed potatoes and asparagus.  The beer was an Oktoberfest from Sam Adams.

Driving home we noticed the full moon.

Once home, I noticed the full moon through a half moon window. 🙂

Did some online shopping at Ulta after I got word that this product is amazing at setting your makeupCan’t wait for mine to show up in the mail.

Also ordered these eyeliners one is fat and one is slim.  Trying to create a new date night look!  A make-up artist gave me some insight on how to use them.  I’ll let you know when mine arrive and show you the end result.

Lastly, have you checked out the goods at Target lately?  Magnolia Hearth and Hand was released and you can buy the entire line of goods online or in the store.  It’s so pretty!

Love the holiday wrapping paper and ribbon.
Beautiful Christmas decorations

A full line of kitchen accessories!

Side note: I was able to run with Dave this weekend and it felt good to get out and run. Although, yesterday I ran 4 miles and ended up aggravating my pulled muscle again, getting old is absolutely horrible.  I hate how I can’t bounce back as quickly.  Anyway no running for a few days. 🙁

Make it a good week!!
