The Book of Longings

  • Subject Headings: Jesus Christ, Ancient civilization, women, friendship

In an interview on NPR, Sue Monk Kidd revealed her desire to write a story told from the point of view by the woman Jesus would have married.  She imagined this woman to be strong willed, educated, caring and good natured.  She also imagined this woman would fight to end oppression and would encourage all women to find their voice.  The wife of Jesus would be a writer.

Sue Monk Kidd created Ana- the future wife of Jesus, son of Nazareth.  When Ana meets Jesus, she instantly feels a connection.  Jesus is only 18 at that point and has not yet fully realized his role in life.  After a dating period, they wed.  Their union brings out the best in each other. They give each other the strength to pursue their individual longings. Jesus desires to teach while continuing to question the authority of the Jewish leaders.  Ana desires to study and write about silenced women, she wants to give all women a voice. For many tumultuous years, Jesus and Ana see each other infrequently, as Jesus’s teachings take him on the road often. The stories of friendship, family love, kindness toward others and forgiveness are woven like a tapestry in this beautiful novel.

When Jesus dies on the cross at the age of 30, we are heartbroken. Sue Monk Kidd describes it with such grim detail it will take your breath way.

Sue Monk Kidd has given us a beautiful love story. I would pair this choice with The Red Tent by Anita Diamant.  Great choice for a book club.

Both book titles mentioned are available at your public library!
