Roza, a Jewish mother and her precocious, musically gifted, 5-yr-old daughter, Shira, have taken cover in a barn to hide away from the Nazis. All day, every day, they must be silent. Trying to keep a 5-yr-old quiet proves difficult especially when all Shira wants to do is move and sing. Roza tells Shira a story of a yellow bird that only they can see and who sings the songs in Shira’s head, that way Shira won’t sing out loud, instead the silent yellowbird will sing her songs for her. They stay hidden for hundreds of days and endure many difficulties. Eventually, they leave the barn and Roza finds an orphanage for Shira, although she wonders if she will ever see her daughter again.
This is a beautiful story that explores the lengths a mother will take to protect her child.
A must for book clubs.
