There is so much to love about this book! Wonderful detail, complex characters, vivid imagery, intriguing plot, tension, power struggles…I could go on.

Addie LaRue was born in France, 1700’s. At seventeen, escaping an unwanted marriage, Addie runs away from her village, only to find herself in the surrounding forest late at night.  She knows not to pray to the Night gods, but she does so anyway.   Making deals with the devil is never a good idea, but Addie feels desperate, she desperately wants adventure- not the tedious life of a village wife.  Addie pledges that night to give her soul for the promise to live her life and be free.  Her wish is granted- she can experience life, travel…see the world, never grow old… albeit with the caveat that she will not be remembered; instead she will live a life of isolation and loneliness. A battle of wits and unwavering determination ensue while the devil tries to sway Addie into releasing her soul. Conversely, Addie travels through the centuries trying to make her mark on history.

Some 300 years pass, and Addie is still gripping on to her soul while experiencing the life she bargained for.  A detriment of the curse is the loss of relationships- Addie is completely alone.  She has affairs, but they only last if they remain in the same room- once they leave, so does her memory.  She feels completely alone until the day she meets Henry.  Henry remembers her and offers her friendship and love. Could Addie have discovered a flaw in the devil’s game? Why is it that after 300 years, along comes a boy who can remember her?

A beautifully crafted love story that will keep you entertained. Your book club members will thank you for the recommendation. 🙂
